Looking at these photographs, what do you see? Families, friends, siblings, young and older experiencing each other and creating remarkable memories. As I write this first blog for Supportive Aging, I pause to think about how life unfolds for us as we age. I attended a wonderful presentation recently by Marc Freedman, author of “HOW TO LIVE FOREVER—THE ENDURING POWER OF CONNECTING THE GENERATIONS” In his presentation, Marc spoke at length about how older adults have become age segregated from the rest of society and how this has led to ageism.
Ageism, or discrimination based upon how old a person is, can lead to social isolation, loneliness, and depression. Worse yet, when an older adult experiences these conditions, the negative impact on their health can be devastating. Evidence shows the resulting health damage is equal to smoking 15 cigarettes per day! But here’s an interesting fact…. Generation Z individuals (those born 1996-2010) experience the same levels of loneliness, depression, and social isolation.
Marc is a leader in the movement of joining generations together for mutual benefit. He makes a compelling case for bringing them together to impart wisdom, create meaning through purpose, and create legacies to leave the world a better place. It’s a great read. Full of new ideas, thoughts to ponder, and, fires to light.
That brings me to Supportive Aging and our goals. We want to create a better life for people of all ages who are affected by life’s health challenges by educating healthcare providers, communities, organizations and, individuals in providing evidence-based services. We hope you’ll check out the website, like us on Facebook/Instagram and spread the word about our company. Most of all, we would love to hear from you and look forward to seeing you at a course one day soon.
